Indonesia’s Commission XII (DPR RI) and MKI Strengthen Collaboration to Accelerate Electricity Law Reform for National Energy Sovereignty
JAKARTA, March 30, 2026 – The Indonesian Electricity Society (Masyarakat Ketenagalistrikan Indonesia / MKI) attended a Public Hearing Meeting (RDPU) with Commission XII of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) to discuss the direction of national energy policy and the strengthening of regulatory frameworks through the revision of the Electricity Law.
During the meeting, MKI officially submitted its White Paper and Written Response to the proposed revision of the Electricity Law to Commission XII of the DPR RI. These documents contain MKI’s strategic recommendations on the draft bill, aimed at ensuring that the energy transition toward Net Zero Emissions (NZE) is aligned with the strengthening of domestic industries and the improvement of public welfare.
MKI’s presence was positively received by various parliamentary factions, which emphasized the importance of synergy between regulators and industry players. Rokhmat Ardiya, a member of Commission XII from the Gerindra Party faction, stressed the need to accelerate the energy transition while maintaining national sovereignty.
"We support all immediate steps and breakthroughs to ensure that the energy transition proceeds safely, remains affordable, and benefits the people in order to strengthen the national economy,"
he stated. He also expressed appreciation for PLN’s concrete efforts in developing Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) along toll roads, which serve as a foundation for transportation electrification.
Similarly, Eddy Suparno from the PAN faction highlighted the urgency of electrification amid global geopolitical tensions."The current geopolitical situation requires us to strengthen electrification, particularly in the transportation and household sectors. The revision of the Electricity Law must be prioritized so that the energy transition does not focus solely on power generation, but also on the broader energy sector," he emphasized.
In addition to sovereignty, efficiency and the use of local components were key points of discussion. Ateng Sutisna from the PKS faction encouraged the implementation of new technologies while ensuring affordability for the public.
"We fully support energy self-sufficiency through increasing the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) so that efficiency and affordability of electricity can truly be realized for all citizens," he stated.
Sugeng Suparwoto, Vice Chairman of Commission XII, added that innovations such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and strengthening research and development (R&D) in solar power utilization, as outlined in MKI’s recommendations, must become top priorities to ensure the stability of clean energy supply in the future.
The hearing also underscored that the current momentum for regulatory revision presents a golden opportunity for Indonesia to reduce dependence on foreign infrastructure dominance. Aqib Ardiansyah from the PAN faction noted that the revised Electricity Law would serve as a valuable legacy.
"This is the right moment to establish long-term energy governance. The Electricity Law must become a strong legacy for the nation’s future, ensuring Indonesia’s full sovereignty over its resources," he explained.
Through the submission of its White Paper and Written Response, MKI reaffirmed its commitment to remain a strategic partner of the DPR RI. These recommendations are designed to ensure that every provision in the draft Electricity Law is capable of addressing challenges related to renewable energy integration (such as the 100 GW solar power target) without compromising the reliability of the national grid system.
